King Abdulaziz Public Library Statement Refereeing Committees’ Reports on Nominations for Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Abdullah Ibn Abdulaziz International Award for Translation 1428-2007
The refereeing and review committees of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Abdullah Ibn Abdulaziz International Award for Translation 1428 – 2007 held a number of meetings to consider the referees’ reports. The committees, then, reached the following decisions, for the award’s five categories:
Translation Award for institutions Translation Award in natural sciences, from Arabic into other languages Translation Award in natural sciences, from other languages into Arabic Translation Award in humanities and social sciences from, Arabic into other languages Translation Award in humanities and social sciences from, other languages into Arabic First The Translation Award for Institutions is awarded to: King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Glorious Qur'an, for the great value and quantity of distinguished works of translation it administers, and funds and for being nominated by a number of governmental and non-governmental organizations for the Award. The complex is one of the most prominent establishments that contributed greatly to the translation of the Glorious Qur'an, presenting translations into fifty different Asian, European, and African languages. The complex did also organize a symposium on the different translations of the Glorious Qur'an and established a translation center. This center encompasses a number of specialized units that study available translations and conduct analytical research projects with the intention of providing more refined translation of the Glorious Qur'an and excluding those of lesser quality or of lower precision. In addition, the complex exerted efforts in creating a large network of translators in different languages and in building a comprehensive and easily accessible data base for translations of the Glorious Qur'an in many languages. The complex, as well, publishes a refereed journal providing scholarly articles on translations of the Glorious Qur'an and the Sunnah and related issues
Second The Translation Award in natural sciences, from other languages into Arabic is jointly awarded to:
Dr. Abdullah Ibrahim Al-Muhaidib (from Saudi Arabia) for his translation, from English into Arabic, of the book: Geotechnical Engineering: Soil Mechanics for John N. Cernica which presents a detailed study of the physical properties of soil and their effects on soil resistance to loads and soil stability. The book analyzes soil mechanics in a clear style and presents a number of practical and legal applications necessary for safe constructions. It also discusses, in detail, the fundamentals of understanding soil properties. Translating such a book into Arabic is very much needed for educational purposed; it is a basic reference for students of civil engineering and offers valuable scientific information presented by an expert the field, someone who complements scientific with practical experience. In addition, the translation of this book contributes significantly to the transfer into Arabic of considerable amount of scientific terminology in the field of civil engineering.
Dr. Ahmad Fouad Basha (from Egypt) for his translation, from English into Arabic, of the book: The Odd Quantum for Sam Treiman which offers interesting explanation of modern theories in physics. It highlights the significance of the quantum theory and explores its broad applications. The book transcends the pictorial and descriptive qualitative explanations of the quantum world to an accurate and comprehensive expression. The translation is characterized by clarity and accuracy.
Third The Translation Award in natural sciences, from Arabic into other languages is NOT awarded this year, due to lack of quality in submitted entries. Fourth The Translation Award in humanities and social sciences, from Arabic into other languages is jointly awarded to:
Dr. Abdulsalam Al-Shaddadi (from Morocco) for his translation, from Arabic into French, of the book: Muqadimat Ibn Khaldun, Kitabu Al’ibar which is considered one of the most circulated and widely read intellectual works in the field of humanities. It is of significant and of core value, not only for Arab and Islamic heritage, but also for global ideology. The translation is characterized by soundness and accuracy. Moreover, its language conforms to the quality and eloquence of the Arabic original.
Dr. Claudia M.Tresso (from Italy) for her translation, from Arabic into Italian, of the book: Ibn Batuta’s Tuhfat Alnodhar fi Ghara’ib Alamsar wa Aja’ib Alasfar which is considered an important source of comparative historical studies. The translator, excelling in her choice, presented a high-quality translation that preserves the spirit of the source text and maintains the basic features of the Arabic original, in terms of form and content
Fifth The Translation Award in humanities and social sciences, from other languages into Arabic is awarded to: Dr. Salih Sadawi Salih (from Egypt) for his translation, from Turkish into Arabic, of the book: Mısır'da Türkler ve Kültürel Mirasları for Akmalaldeen Ihsan Oghli which is considered one of the most important references of the Ottoman era and its cultural influence in Egypt. The book traces the cultural presence of the Ottomans, from its early beginnings throughout the different stages of its development. This translation is of a great historical and cultural value, and it is characterized by accuracy and refined quality.
Finally, the Board of Directors of King Abdulaziz Public Library owes debt of gratitude to His Majesty King Abdullah Ibn Abdulaziz, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, the Library's Supreme Chairman, for His Majesty’s support and patronage. The board then, wishes to express thanks to the award’s Board of Trustees, members of the Scientific Committee, and the reviewers and referees for their great efforts. Thanks are also extended to all commissions, universities, educational establishments, and individuals for submitting their nominations. The Board of Directors also expresses its heartfelt congratulations to this year’s winners in the different categories of the Award. |
